The curators of Blank Arcade: Ludo Mix invite submissions for an exhibit of games and related media to be displayed at the DiGRA annual conference in Kyoto, Japan, August 7th and 8th, 2019. The Blank Arcade is an ongoing exhibition of games, play art and interactive media aligned with the Digital Games Research Association's (DiGRA) annual conference. Started in 2014 for the DiGRA Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Blank Arcade has since been in Lüneburg, Germany in 2015 and Dundee, Scotland in 2016. In 2019, the Blank Arcade will be in Kyoto, Japan.
The curators invite artists, scholars and designers to submit works that engage practically or conceptual with the 2019 conference theme, Ludo-mix. We invite play-focused creative work that crosses genres, combines that which might not normally be combined, mixes media or reminds players of different ways to play. This may include traditional digital games, machinima, photography, video collage, critical play, intervention and others. How can a playful mix move the creative practice of designing games and play forward? What combinations haven’t been explored, that should be explored? How is the mix stronger than the individual parts and what is gained by doing such?

The conference typically has more than 200 participants, primarily an internationally recognized community of game studies scholars and critics.
The 2019 Blank Arcade will take a very different approach to exhibition. Playing on the conferences themes, which include a track on games spectatorship, exhibiting artists will deliver artists talks via a live game streaming service, Twitch. These live streams will be broadcast during the conference in a dedicated exhibition space. Artists are asked to play their own work, discuss their decisions and vision, and interact with conference attendees as appropriate. Each accepted artist or group will be given a 30 to 60-minute stream talk on large screen and in parallel to other talks. No prior experience with live streaming is expected.
As in years past, the event will include the publication of an exhibit catalog. These books are available on Amazon and other bookstores, and as free PDF downloads on the exhibit website.
